India Bets on Export-Led MSME Growth with New Credit and Trade Push

India is sharpening its focus on turning small businesses into global players, with a fresh set of policy moves aimed at integrating Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) into international supply chains.

At the core of this strategy is a shift from domestic support to export-driven growth. The government has introduced a large-scale Export Promotion Mission designed to streamline how MSMEs access global markets. With a planned investment of over ₹25,000 crore for the next five years, the initiative aims to create a more structured and digitally connected export ecosystem.

Complementing this is a new credit guarantee framework tailored specifically for exporters. By offering full guarantee coverage on loans extended to exporters, the scheme reduces the risk for lenders and makes it easier for MSMEs to access collateral-free credit. This is expected to unlock significant working capital, allowing smaller firms to scale operations and explore new markets.

The broader goal behind these measures is to address long-standing barriers that have limited MSME participation in global trade such as lack of finance, limited market access, and low competitiveness. By combining financial support with export-oriented reforms, policymakers are attempting to reposition MSMEs as key contributors to India’s global trade ambitions.

This push is particularly significant given the sector’s economic weight. MSMEs already account for a substantial share of India’s manufacturing output and exports, making them central to any long-term growth strategy.

With improved liquidity, stronger policy backing, and a clear export roadmap, the government is aiming to move MSMEs beyond local markets and embed them more deeply into global value chains. The success of these initiatives could determine how effectively India competes in an increasingly interconnected global economy.
