Mumbai, Mar 9 (KNN) The Government of Maharashtra will establish a dedicated commissionerate for the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in Mumbai, aimed at strengthening policy implementation and expanding support for enterprises across the state.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis while presenting the Maharashtra Budget 2026–27. He said the government will also set up a separate commissionerate for the service sector, with both institutions to be headquartered in Mumbai, reported The Times Of India.
According to officials, the MSME commissionerate will function as the nodal mechanism for formulating, implementing and monitoring policies related to the sector. It will also facilitate access to credit and markets, promote innovation, and address grievances of entrepreneurs and industrial units.
The Chief Minister further announced the establishment of ‘Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Centres’ in every district, with the policy expected to generate around 50 lakh direct jobs across the state.
As per the state’s latest economic survey, Maharashtra had about 63.85 lakh MSMEs registered on the Udyam Registration Portal as of December 2025.
These include 62.11 lakh micro enterprises, 1.55 lakh small enterprises and around 18,000 medium enterprises, collectively employing nearly 2.52 crore people.
Deependra Singh Kushwah, Development Commissioner for Industries, said the new MSME commissionerate is expected to become operational within the next two months.
The institution will include specialised cells for cluster development, service-sector MSMEs, export facilitation and inclusive entrepreneurship in line with the state’s Industrial Policy 2025.
Officials said the new framework will support the implementation of schemes, incentives and promotional measures aimed at improving competitiveness and enabling MSMEs in the state to scale sustainably.
